BLIGHT IN DETROIT

Brianna's opinion:

What I can do to stop blight is I can help my neighborhood by cleaning around the outside and in front of the abandoned buildings. Another idea to prevent blight from his acts is for everyone on a certain day to help fix up the neighborhoods, by planting and mowing the lawns just to make the neighborhood look its best. Also I can help trim the bushes so the bushes won’t be so prickly because some are prickly. Also I can plant in the backyard I could plant flowers and get help from my parents so I can maybe make an apple tree.
I think that Mr. Danto should get charged. Also should not because well first he did not asked the police or the government and he just took it upon himself to want to take an abandoned house and board it up and put a sign and says he boarded it up. I don’t think it is right if you put a sign on an abandoned house and then the news reporters come to you and see that you had boarded up houses. Also it does not make sense to put a sign on an abandoned house and say that you did it.
The reason why I think Mr. Danto shouldn’t get charged because he did kind of a good thing because he did help the neighborhood. Also they had said that it was good that he had boarded them up because people might end up going in one of those houses. But one time he had boarded up one of the houses and it was across the street from an school. The teacher said thank you because they might come over there and play at that abandoned house. I think it is good and bad because he helped a school and it’s bad because it’s not legal to board up a house that’s not yours.

What can I do to prevent blight in my neighborhood or help keep it clean? One thing I came up with, with the help of my mom was if I could try to get everyone who lives next door to an abandoned house or across from one to adopt it. That could help with keeping the grass cut or keeping people from dumping trash. After school some times we ride past an area where people dump trash in front of abandoned houses and mom my always say how that is so bad. After we read about blight I understood more about why my mom always say it so bad.

I do not feel Mr. Danto should be charged with anything. He is doing what the city should be doing. He is also helping prevent bad things like arson and giving people who use drugs a place to stay. My mom also explained that some times people who kidnap kids hide in abandon houses waiting for kids to pass by and then snatch them. That is one of the most important reasons I think he should not be charged. Another reason I feel he should keep doing this is because a lot of people want him too. For the principle at Harms school it helped her to feel less afraid for her students to walk home. If what he is doing help so many people in a positive way why should he be charged? He's not hurting anyone, he's helping.

My mom said if we are going just by the law then he is doing something wrong but she also said that when Rosa Parks sat in the front of the bus she was breaking the law but look at all the good that came out of it. Her refusing to give up her seat made it so that I could sit anywhere I want to sit on the bus. She made me think that some times depending on how important something is you may have to do something everyone don't agree with. Everyone don't agree with what Mr. Danto is doing but it is making a lot of other people feel safe because of it. I agree with what Mr. Danto is doing and I hope he keeps boarding up abandoned and burned up houses and I hope he never gets in trouble for doing so.

People who are ugly and rich can buy more nice clothes to make themselves look good.  They can give to charity to show their goodness.  They can give to the homeless and shelters to make other people look good.  Eve though a person may be ugly they still can help other people.  It really doesn’t matter how you look all that is how you treetd others.

If I had to choose between ugly and rich or beautiful and poor, I would choose beautiful and poor.  The reason I chose beautiful and poor, being rich is not always good.  There are plenty of rich people who are not happy.  There are also plenty of poor people who are unhappy but the poor seems to value things more than the rich.  No on wishes to be ugly, but being ugly is not always on the outside and neither is beauty.
After talking to my mom about beauty I learned that not all people who are beautiful on the outside are beautiful on the inside and that’s more important.  We also talked about how having money does not always mean your rich because I am rich in family history.  My mom and my grandmother has told me a lot about my great grandparents.  Not many are rich in that information.  I am greatful.
Writing this assignment helped me to understand that ugly can mean many things.  I also learned that being rich does not mean having a lot of money.  My mom asked me if I still would choose to be beautiful and poor and my answer was if that meant being beautiful inside and out because I am already rich.  I learned a lot writing this passage.

Dear Inge,
I am proud of your courage and bravery.  Living during the time of the Holocaust must have ben very scary for you and your family, and the other Jewish citizens.  Losing your dad to the concentration camp had to have been devastating for your family.

Your life has affected me in many ways.  It help me to value life and family.  Living in the terrible conditions that you and your family had to face had to been awful.  I was raised in the City of Detroit and the ghettos here still seem to be much better than what you have been forced to live.

I am grateful that you and your family survived the Holocaust, and were rescued by the Soviet troops.  I hope you guys were able to find peace in your hearts and minds.
                                                                                                            Yours truly,
                                                                                                            Khalif Hampton

Can a person be free to walk down the street, but still be imprisoned?
Yes, a person can be free to walk down the street but still be imprisoned.  This person may still be imprisoned because people might feel this person is a criminal and should not be trusted.  This person might want a second chance to turn him/herself around.

Another type of feeling imprisoned is when a person is free but they can't do what they want.  An example is segregation.  There were stores, water fountains, and restaurants that had signs that said "colored" and "white". This is an example because black folks were free to roam the streets but they had to go to the colored shops.  They weren't free to do anything they wanted. So, yes, a person can be free to walk down the street but they might still feel imprisoned.

Yes, I consider freedom my right.  I say that because I feel that if we have freedom that is the right thing.  I am definitely willing to stand up for my rights (freedom) and say NO! My freedom is something I would die for because I learned something from my ancestors Rosa Parks and many other people.  I learned to love freedom and be glad that we have it today to share among our fellow peers.  I would also break a law and go to jail for my freedom because jail does not scare me worse than loosing my freedom rights.

I will risk my life so the people around me will remember me and they won't have to go another minute without freedom.  So, like the song, "LET FREEDOM RING"!

I feel that if I had to take certain things and i was leaving in less than 5 minutes i would bring what ever i had with me that would help me later on. For example if i had food or water i would take that with me. I would take that with me because if i have to go somewere it make take a while and i will need some food and water. It is also important so that way just in case you don't have any money you would have came prepared.
Anothe thing you may bring is some clothes. You may need some clothes because at the time you may be tight on money so you should come with some.Another reason you may need clothes is because if you don't have any money and your steady growing you may grow out of your stuff. That is one of my items i would bring.
The last item i think you should bring is something you could remerber your parents or your family by. I say that because just in case your not with them at the time and you guys go to a different locatoin you should have something. Also because you never know whats gonna happen. I say that because just like in japan they had no idea that there was a tsnami coeing or the earthquake. Those are the items I belive you should bring.
